I’m just as distracted as the next guy. Probably more distracted than most, actually. But I have a few tricks up my sleeve for when I need to pull myself together and get sh*t done. One of them is listening to the same song over and over again.
Sounds weird, boring and possibly distracting? I actually find it relaxing and focusing at the same time. It really helps me to achieve the mythical flow state we all are seeking. The trick – for me at least – is to choose a song that you know well and that has a good groove.
For really deep focus, I turn to songs that have little to no vocals. Something like Kontor Sunset Chill works great here. When you need to drown out ambient noise, metal and hardcore music can also work great – the midrange of the guitars works wonders.
I’m not the only one who does this. I actually only realized this was a “technique” when I heard Matt Mullenweg of Automattic mention it on Tim Ferriss’ Podcast. This gentleman helped create Wordpress.org, the tool powering a quarter of the whole internet… what more of an endorsement do you need?
Convinced yet? Or have you tried it already? What songs do you jam while working? Let me know in the comment section!
